World Series Up In Ratings
Someone said no one cares about this World Series. Actually, this World Series jumped 8% in the ratings compared to last year's first four games. Typically, if they'd gone six or seven games, the ratings would have continued to rise. Since Boston was the top draw on the road this yea (beating the Yankees), it's only natural they would be a top draw on TV. In an era of decling ratings, managing to grow even though they swept is a definite positive sign for baseball. Or maybe people just tuned in on the hope they'd hear something about A-Rod....

Bragging about an 8% increase from the worst year of ratings ever isn't saying much. This was still the second worst rated series ever.... even with Boston in it.
If a bum begging for money has 12 cents in his cup and someone gives him another penny, should we praise the bum for increasing his net worth by 8%?
Up is up. EVERYTHING in television is down in the ratings -- the oscars, the super bowl, american idol, grey' anatomy, heroes, you name it. Going up in the ratings despite being a four game sweep (an almost predicatable sweep where the Rockies had the lead for about one inning total) is a very good development. Its demos were also very good. This shows Boston to be a national draw, as you would expect for a major team from a major market. If the fall in baseball ratings have bottomed out and are on the upswing from the debacles of the 90s with cheats and strikes and cancelled world series, the TV networks will be v happy.
Not everything in television is down... 48 Hours Mystery and and 60 minutes are up.
The ratings are up for a few reasons. Last year the audience was mainly from the midwest. The Red Sox draw a national audience, and the ratings are helped by the fact that the Rockies are in a different area as well.
Also this is the first year the Series started during the week (when people actually watch tv) instead of on the weekend. I'm guessing that helped a little, but who knows.
Good point, Joe. The midweek start def helped since Saturday is the lowest viewing night of the week.
