What does it mean, exactly, to be put on assignment? Can other teams snap him up? Does it mean simply returning to triple A? And who exactly is the everyday first baseman?
I believe be "designated for assignment" means that the Yankees can temporarily open up another roster spot while they decide what to do with him.
It's a relatively short time period (maybe 2 weeks). Then they have to either send him to the minors, trade him or waive him. It's kind of like the IR list.

Why? For $10 they could have kept him. Whose their first baseman?
I think he still has options left so he's not gone, only optioned back to Scranton.
