Our First Base Problems Are Over

With Giambi and Miencheozhsdijar on the DL for the better part of the season, we've had the proverbial "revolving door" at first. Cairo filled in admirably before also getting injured, Andy Phillips, while "beautiful", is not an every day firstbaseman, and it was fun seeing Shelley Duncan get off to a quick start in the bigs. What we really need is some stability at first and finally the Yanks have done something about it. Last week, the Yanks signed one of my personal favorites to a minor league contract and first base should be locked up for years to come by Erubiel Durazo. I can't help but be excited about the Yanks getting a player with a 1.074 career minor league OPS and the Yank's global brand will only be enhanced by fielding a Mexican player within our little baseball melting pot. It may take until September for Durazo to put on his pinstripes, but that will truly be a glorious day!

A 32 year old guy dumped by Oakland and stuck in the Mexican league where he underperformed compared to one-time Yankees like Ruber Rivera -- that's your idea of our long-term fix? And what complaints do you have about Phillips? His glove has been excellent and his batting has been clutch over the last weeks. I wouldn't expect him to excel like he has been at the plate long-term, but are you frightened of a position player -- someone who is a solid glove and hitting .275, say, with some timely hits? At best, this guy sounds like filler until you bring up some real long-term talent. But the idea that we still have a problem a first base for the rest of this season is crazy.

Seriously, where do you fault Phillips as a glove?

I don't fault Phillips as a glove at all. I actually quite like Phillips and prefer him at first over Giambi or Mienchasdoihpoizx. I'm just excited that a player the Yanks signed a player that I've pined for from afar. It's not as great as when the Yanks signed my All-Time favorite non-Yankee, Doug Glanville, but it's still exciting for me.

Phillips has been fantastic and deserves the job for the rest of the year. I might even break Mientadkflja;'s other wrist to keep him from coming back.

How the heck could you pine for this guy? Abreu I understand. But him? Based on what?

And listen to yourself, "I don't fault Philips as a glove..." So you think your first baseman is a solid glove, he's batting .304 and been a clutch hitter for a month now and he's done it all in the glare of New York. And you want to dump him. That is classic Steinbrenner -- lusting after some aging veteran that might have been useful five years ago but is now over the hill and pushing aside a guy who is performing to make room for them.

I think that should be our standard insult: classic Steinbrenner.
