The A-Rod Chronicles

At this rate we might need to change the name of this blog to that...

I'm going to be honest. Alex Rodriguez, at the end of the season, should opt out of his contract to go play for a team that will appreciate his talents (as long as they are a contender of course). And when he does, I'm going to blame ungrateful Yankee fans who are going to realize how myopic they've been.

For whatever reason, the guy just can't win over New Yorkers, and its gotten to the point where I'm ashamed of any Yankee fan that hasn't warmed up to him. The guy plays harder than anyone, he's on course for his 2nd MVP in 4 seasons, he's playing Gold Glove defense at a position that he never played before, and all he does is try to say and do the right thing all the time (with varying degrees of success). Yet for some reason Yankee fans seem to think HE owes THEM something. Why? So he's not perfect...big deal. Who is?

I can understand the media fixation with trashing ARod. It's easy to pile on and no one ever gets sick of picking on ARod. Most of those guys are hacks anyway. But I'll never understand why Yankee fans don't appreciate this guy for showing up every single game and giving it his all.

He's won over his teammates. He's won over his coaches. If he does stay, besides for the obvious ($$), it'll be because of those two factors and the unparalleled tradition that the Yankees offer. But if not, I can't blame him. Bottom line...A-Rod deserves better. Yankee fans have 2 or 3 more months to realize that.

I won't miss A-Rod anymore than I'll miss Soriano. I do appreciate that he doesn't beat his children or do steroids (as far as we know) or behave like a schmuck. But he is a HUGE distraction. He constantly says the wrong things. He's done a handful of punk ass things on the field that are embarrassing -- like shouting BOO in Toronto that should have ended in Litle League. I'll lambaste Clemens for his punk ass move of throwing that bat at Piazza and so why shouldn't I critique A-Rod. He did not deserve the MVP award two seasons ago. It was voted on by people who simply look at the RBI numbers and vote accordingly He wasn't even the best player on the Yankees. This year, he is playing great and except for his punk ass moves, I have no complaint with him on the field, even when he's been weak. Frankly, I held off on him last year because he was down. I do NT think he's won over his teammates. What evidence is there for that, other than Melky and Cano giving him a boost? I think they'd be happy to see him go, just like every other team he's played for. I don't give him a hard time at the Stadium. I always cheer him. I never boo. I don't expect anything other than he play hard. And he does. But he is not a good building block for creating a cohesive team, he's been a huge off-field distraction for four years now and I think he and we will be better off as a team if he goes elsewhere. I;m not a putz who boos every time he strikes out. I've watched him carefully for four years, cheered him every single at bat, listened to all his comments and he invariably says the wrong thing and is about himself first and I'd rather spend the money in other ways. Will I miss him? Not a chance? Will I be crushed if he stays? depends on the deal. The best part about getting him was dumping Soriano, another player with great stats who doesn't do a damn thing for the team.

Them's fightin' words since Sori was Joe's favorite player while he was a Yankee...

Whoops. Didn't know Sori was your favorite, Joe. Watching him day in and day out, he just didn't seem to have a good head for baseball. Crazily talented as a bat, but he didn't seem t be working hard and getting better in the outfield. I saw him seem to ignore or misread orders from Bernie Williams time and time again. HIs attitude on other teams -- refusing to taking the field because he didn't like where he was positioned (and really, you can claim that was a one time event, but it's truly telling and significant -- 99% of all players go their entire careers without such an incident) and on. He puts up great personal stats -- just like A-Rod -- but in a far more poisonous way, I'd say he does not help you build a good team. A-Rod I've always seen as over-thinking and unintentionally creating drama and simply not being a guy people warm up to. Soriano just isn't a team player. He's me first, a superstar in stats only.
